About Open Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery
Overview
Open Carpal Tunnel surgery is performed to relieve pressure from the median nerve, restoring normal sensation to the hand and fingers. El Paso Specialty Hospital usually performs this procedure on an outpatient basis.
Step 1
The orthopaedic surgeon makes a small incision, about two inches long, through the palm of the hand to reveal the transverse carpal ligament.
Step 2
The surgeon inserts a thin metal guide between the transverse carpal ligament and the median nerve. This will ensure tha the median nerve is out of the way and protected.
Step 3
The constricting carpal ligament is then cut, relieving pressure on the median nerve.
End of Procedure
The incision is closed with sutures. The surgeon applies a splint to the wrist, and the patient is allowed to go home. After a period of healing, hand rehabilitation therapy is performed to help rebuild the wrist strength.
